With support from UNICEF, CDFU is implementing Community Based Preventive and Promotive Nutrition Communication Interventions that focus on improving and promoting positive nutrition practices among parents and caregivers. The interventions are implemented in the 5 Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) districts of Kabale, Kanungu, Ibanda, Pader and Nebbi. Since July 2014, CDFU has been able to achieve the following;
• Conduct a mapping exercise to establish existing community groups, VHTs, positive deviants, and drama group to collaborate with. Up to 655 community groups, 616 potential positive deviants, and 2852 VHTs were profiled during the mapping exercise.
• Training of VHTs and other special groups that included community leaders, Community-based organizations (CBOs), religious leaders and subcounty local government staff in infant and young child feeding (IYCF). The IYCF trainings were aimed at equipping participants with basic but essential skills in nutrition practices, water, hygiene and sanitation and interpersonal communication (IPC). Up to 1624 participants benefited from the trainings.
• Oriented selected drama groups in forum theatre. Up to 232 members representing 116 drama groups in all the five districts benefited from this training.
• Conducted food fairs in the homes of selected positive deviants to educate parents and caregivers in proper infant and young child feeding.
CDFU is also planning to embark on health facility activations and community dialogues to increase community participation in BCC activities for nutrition.
